With Jose Mourinho at the helm of Manchester United and Pep Guardiola in charge of Manchester City, both sides are looking to change the fortunes of these two giants. For Manchester United supporters the appointment of the ‘Special One’ sees them looking forward to his unique style being able to turn around the club’s fortunes. With the new additions of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Eric Bailey, fans are looking to Mourinho to improve on last season’s fifth place in the league.

Manchester City finished fourth last season and fans are hoping that recent new signings, such as the new midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will boost their chances of winning the league. Although Gundogan is presently recovering from a knee injury, reports say he is working towards being fit in time for the derby game. Another new addition to the side is Leroy Sane. Many have seen his signing as benefiting not just the club but also young players who will have the opportunity to grow under its new management.

Each team has won two of the last five derby games. The cancellation of the pre-season derby game on 25th July in Beijing means that we don’t yet know what to expect when they next meet. Unless each manager can establish their unique style on the team, it is unlikely that we will see any surprises based on past experience. The last time they met, Manchester United won the match 1 – 0. Fans will probably be hoping they can do the same again.
